Tetro (15)
The bohemian Buenos Aires neighborhood of La Boca provides the backdrop for this stylishly cool and sultry poetic drama about a family torn apart by deep rivalries, secrets, and betrayals - including classic elements of Greek tragedy, and a vivid cinematography, paying tribute to the masterworks of the 50’s and 60’s. King of Cool Vincent Gallo stars as the melancholy writer Tetro, and introducing new talent Alden Ehrenreich as his younger brother Bennie. 17-year-old Bennie arrives in Argentina, fresh faced and naïve, in search of his older brother, Tetro, who has been missing for more than a decade, and had sworn never to see any of his family again. The family of Italian immigrants settled in Argentina, but with the great musical success of their domineering father Carlo (Klaus Maria Brandauer),
an acclaimed symphony conductor, moved to New York. When Bennie finds his brother he is not the idolized, wonderful, talented brother of his youth, but the opposite. Rebuffed by his brother, Bennie seeks solace from Tetro’s girlfriend Miranda (Maribel Verdu), and staying at their small bohemian apartment, Bennie finds Tetro’s hidden writing, an unfinished play revealing the reason for Tetro’s passionate rejection of his family. As Tetro discovers Bennie’s ambition to complete the play, a violent fight ensues . . . Having lived a colorful, turbulent life, replete with triumphs and calamities, Francis Ford Coppola now returns full circle to the aspirations of his younger self: writing and directing personally meaningful films. Tetro is the first original screenplay from Francis Ford Coppola in more than 30 years.
