Synopsis

Bleak Moments is Mike Leigh's debut feature film, a haunting and disturbing study of a young woman's isolation in the late 1960s. Sylvia leads a very quiet life caring for her mentally ill sister Hilda. Sylvia yearns for companionship but their solitary life has left her unable to interact fully with others. Bleak Moments was first released in 1971

and it won the Golden Leopard in Locarno in 1972. it is released for the first time on DVD, here with a contemporary commentary by director Mike Leigh. Bleak Moments sits fittingly in Mike Leigh's cannon of work, which include the award winning Secrets & Lies, Naked and Life is Sweet and his new theatrical feature Happy-Go-Lucky.
