Bye Bye Blackbird (TBC)

Synopsis

A tragic and unforgettable love story set within the colourful and dramatic world of a turn-of-the-century travelling circus, Bye Bye Black Bird follows the attempt of one young man to remain true to his ideal of Love. When Josef falls in love with Alice, a young and beautiful trapeze artist, he is inspired to join Dempsey's Circus in an attempt to win her hand. Soon he realises that the only way Alice will take notice of him is if he too becomes a trapeze artist-and he sets about making this come to pass. Lord Dempsey, the manipulative circus owner and Alice's father, tries to foil Josef's attempts, but such is the skill and invention of the act that Josef creates that Dempsey cannot help but agree. The night of the act approaches and Josef seems to

be close to realising his ideal but Alice falls during the act and is apparently fatally wounded. Terrible news reaches the camp: Alice is dead. Josef is destroyed by the news and resolves never again to set foot upon the ground: he refuses to forget. Meanwhile Dempsey uses Josef as a circus attraction to gain more and more revenue. But when the interest in Josef among the Public begins to wane, Lord Dempsey forces Josef to do another act. Josef decides that he will attempt the same act, but this time he will perform solo. The circus tours from city to city, passing through Europe, and Josef begins to sink into madness, plagued in his isolation by terrible visions. The circus comes to Venice and on the night of the act, Alice suddenly returns alive .
